Learning Activities (choose one or more to equal 50 min)
1 | DISCUSS (30 min) • Discuss the anatomical structures of the face. Appropriate Settings: Traditional/online/flipped classroom |
2 | DISCUSS (30 min) • Discuss the common diagnostic procedures of the face with the class. Include purpose and pathology in the discussion. Appropriate Settings: Traditional/online/flipped classroom |
3 | DEMONSTRATE (50 min) • Give students the opportunity to view and handle the special instruments used in maxillofacial procedures. • Demonstrate the specific elements of case planning for oral and maxillofacial surgery. Include setting up the room, instruments, and special equipment. Appropriate Settings: Traditional classroom |
4 | PRESENT (50 min) • Break the class into small groups. Assign each group a common fracture or congenital anomaly from the textbook. Have each group develop a brief presentation on the location of the fracture/anomaly and any special considerations. Appropriate Settings: Traditional/online/flipped classroom |
5 | DISCUSS (30 min) • Break into small groups. Give each group a blank transparency and a marker. Have each group populate its “Mayo tray” on the sheet for maxillomandibular fixation. Have a spokesperson from each group share its work with the rest of the class. Appropriate Settings: Traditional classroom |
Critical Thinking Question
Maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) is used in many repairs of facial fractures and orthognathic procedures. What special patient safety considerations might apply to the patient undergoing MMF?
Discussion Guidelines: Students should recognize that MMF involves “wiring” the patient’s mouth shut. Certainly, nutrition is a concern, but the paramount safety issue is maintaining a patent airway. Wire cutters are kept with the patient at all times.
