Critical Thinking Question
Define the surgical department and its purpose.
Discussion Guidelines: The surgical department is structured and engineered to provide a safe and efficient environment for patients and staff members. Many different designs can be used, but all must achieve the following objectives: infection control; environmental safety; and efficient use of personnel, time, space, and material resources.
Define the role of the different work areas in the operating room.
Discussion Guidelines: Surgical departments can vary widely in size, use of space, and types of work areas they contain. Regardless of the exact appropriation of space, every department strives to maintain the principles of asepsis—separating and confining contaminated areas to keep them apart from clean and sterile areas.
The surgical suite is designed in a way that facilitates good patient care. Discuss the layout of the operating room and how it can reduce surgical site infections
Discussion Guidelines: Surgical site infections cause 2% to 5% of all infections in the hospital. The design of the operating room helps facilitate the movement of microorganisms out of the room. Discuss the design of the operating room, the air flow, temperature and humidity, and what these items prevent.

Critical Thinking Question
Define and explain the organizational chart and chain of command.
Discussion Guidelines: Hospital management and operational staff members usually are organized into separate bodies or groups of people whose joint functions and roles enable patient and community services. The administrative sector designs and implements personnel procedures, policies, and financial systems. It communicates with the public and handles overall institutional issues, such as public relations and quality assurance.
In today’s economy, hospitals have been adding more responsibility to the health care worker’s job description. A job description of the surgical team is often up for review. When you take a job, you sign a job description. Discuss why you would sign a new job description after you are employed, and can the institution have you sign a new job description?
Discussion Guidelines: In today’s ever-changing working conditions, some hospitals have you sign a new job description each year. Comparing to the previous job description, you will notice roles and responsibilities have been added or removed.
